The 2027 edition of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) will take effect on January 1, 2027, with corresponding updates to air, sea and other transport regulations. For battery manufacturers, there is one critical task to complete in advance before the renewal of test reports next year: replace the battery marks on packaging with the new version. Recently, we have noticed that many shipping packages still carry old labels. This article clarifies the most frequently asked questions for customers.

I. Battery Mark Version Upgrade: Old Version Phased Out, Adopt the Current Version Immediately

The 68th edition of DGR introduces major updates to marks and labels for battery shipments. Key points are listed below:

1. The old battery mark with a telephone number field has been phased out.
2. Shippers are recommended to use the current version of the battery mark. The new version removes the emergency contact field "For more information, call:", while the UN number must still be displayed on the mark. The minimum size of the mark is 100mm × 100mm; for small packages, it may be reduced to no less than 100mm × 70mm.
3. Transition period: Old marks with telephone numbers may be used until December 31, 2026. Starting January 1, 2027, only the current version without a telephone number shall be applied.
4. Affixation requirements: All labels must be firmly affixed or printed on the package. Labels cannot be folded, and sufficient space on the package must be reserved for required labels.

Quick takeaway: Any mark printed with a telephone number at the bottom is the old version. All transport modes including air, sea, road and rail have adopted the new mark. Early switchover is strongly recommended.

II. All Transport Test Certificates to Be Updated in Line with New Labels

This change applies to more than air transport. Marine, road and railway transport regulations have been revised accordingly, affecting all modes of transportation:

1. All transport identification certificates for air, sea, road and rail will be issued with the new labels during renewal in 2027.
2. Existing packaging test reports such as drop and stacking tests issued with old marks remain valid. However, when renewing to the 2027 version identification certificate, photos of outer cartons using the new marks must be provided.

III. Three Immediate Actions for Customers

1. Audit packaging inventory: If old labels (with telephone numbers) are printed on color boxes, outer cartons or instruction manuals, carry out rectification as soon as possible to avoid delays in 2027 certificate renewal and shipments.
2. Apply new labels for new test projects: For all new test submissions starting now, design and print packaging directly with the new labels. Continued use of old labels will require revision before testing can proceed and extend your lead time.
3. Schedule annual renewal in advance: The end and beginning of each year is the peak period for air and sea transport certificate renewal. Submit samples and arrange testing early to avoid backlogs.

⚠ Important Notice: Effective immediately, any test submission using the old battery mark with a telephone number will be required by engineers to revise the label before proceeding. Please complete the switchover early to prevent project delays.
