Amid the global energy transition, electric vehicle (EV) chargers—core infrastructure—are experiencing explosive market demand. A Chinese EV charger manufacturer aiming to enter the North American market faced a golden opportunity, but also one of the world’s strictest market access barriers: UL 2594 certification. This is not just a "passport" to the North American market, but the ultimate test of product safety and reliability. The client’s goal was clear and urgent: obtain certification within 8 weeks to seize the fleeting business window. However, the path to certification was fraught with risks that could derail the entire project.
The client’s pain point did not stem from doubts about their product quality, but from deep anxiety about the "unknowns" in the certification process. The UL 2594 standard covers a series of complex and stringent test items, including electrical safety, structural strength, and thermal management. For chargers—products with complex structures and high mold costs—any potential design flaw (whether a tiny deviation in insulation distance, insufficient heat resistance of housing materials, or heat accumulation caused by internal layout issues) would lead to catastrophic consequences if exposed during formal testing:
Thus, the client’s real challenge was: under tight time constraints, how to minimize the vicious cycle of "test failure → design modification → cost overruns". They needed more than a test executor—they needed a partner capable of anticipating risks and providing guarantees.
Understanding the client’s extreme concerns about costs and risks, GTG did not immediately launch the formal certification process. Instead, we proposed a more strategically valuable pre-testing service. The core of this solution was to shift from "post-failure remediation" to "pre-emptive prevention"—like sending scouts to map out minefields and plan the safest, most efficient route before a formal expedition.
Based on in-depth understanding of the UL 2594 standard and rich project experience, GTG’s technical team extracted the most critical and error-prone test items from the standard, such as input testing, power measurement, temperature rise testing, abnormal operation testing, and withstand voltage testing. In our independent laboratory, using equipment as precise as that of official UL institutions, we conducted full-simulation tests on the client’s charger samples. This process was not a superficial check but an in-depth exploration, aiming to accurately replicate all harsh conditions that might be encountered in formal testing.
The value of pre-testing lies not only in identifying problems but also in solving them. During testing, GTG engineers closely monitored the product’s performance data and behavioral indicators. When abnormal data or critical states were detected, the team immediately conducted root-cause analysis and provided the client with a detailed "diagnostic report" covering structural design, material selection, and circuit layout. The report not only clearly identified problem points but also included specific, actionable improvement suggestions—such as: "It is recommended to increase the creepage distance from 4.0mm to 5.2mm at a specific location" and "The heat sink of a certain component needs to be enlarged to pass the continuous full-load temperature rise test".
After the client completed product design optimizations based on our suggestions, GTG’s project team ensured a seamless transition from pre-testing to formal application. All data and experience accumulated during pre-testing provided strong support for preparing the formal application document package, ensuring that materials submitted to UL institutions passed review on the first attempt and avoiding delays caused by document revisions.
GTG’s pre-testing service delivered returns far exceeding the client’s expectations:
In the fiercely competitive global market, speed and stability are equally essential. With professional technical insight and a client-value-centered service philosophy, GTG has built a solid "firewall" for EV charger manufacturers through forward-looking pre-testing services. We understand that excellent certification services do not lie in simply implementing standards, but in helping clients skillfully navigate standards, turn uncertainty into controllable plans, and ultimately win in the market.
