UN38.3 is a mandatory testing standard for lithium battery transportation safety specified in the United Nations’ Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods – Manual of Tests and Criteria. A UN38.3 test report for batteries is an authoritative document proving that lithium battery products have passed relevant safety tests and meet international transportation requirements.
According to regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA), all lithium batteries must be accompanied by a UN38.3 test report before air transportation. It is an indispensable pass for lithium battery products to engage in international trade via air, sea, or other means.
Through a series of rigorous tests, UN38.3 verifies the safety performance of lithium batteries under various extreme conditions that may be encountered during transportation, effectively preventing safety accidents such as fires and explosions.
Major logistics companies and airlines worldwide require shippers to provide valid UN38.3 test reports; otherwise, they will refuse to accept lithium battery shipments. It is also a basic threshold for products to enter the international market.
UN38.3 testing applies to various types of lithium battery products, mainly including:
UN38.3 certification includes 8 stringent tests to comprehensively evaluate the safety of lithium batteries under various extreme conditions:
Simulates safety in low-pressure air transportation environments. The battery is stored at a pressure ≤11.6kPa and temperature 20±5℃ for more than 6 hours.
Evaluates battery stability under extreme temperature changes. Conducts high-low temperature shock tests at 75±2℃ and -40±2℃.
Simulates transportation vibration environments. Completes a reciprocating logarithmic sweep sine vibration from 7Hz to 200Hz within 15 minutes.
Verifies the battery’s impact resistance using a 150g/6ms or 50g/11ms half-sine shock.
Short-circuits the battery at 55±2℃ with an external resistance <0.1Ω to verify safety protection capabilities under short-circuit conditions.
Evaluates safety under mechanical impact through specific weight impact testing.
Overcharges the battery at 2 times the maximum continuous charging current and 2 times the maximum charging voltage to verify overcharge tolerance.
Evaluates the battery’s safety under forced discharge conditions.
During the above tests, the battery must not disintegrate, catch fire, or explode. Additionally, no toxic, flammable, or corrosive substances may leak.
Typically 2–3 weeks to complete the entire process; the cycle may be extended for complex products.
| Battery Type | Quantity Requirements |
|---|---|
| Lithium-ion batteries (single cell) | 18pcs + 30pcs |
| Lithium-ion batteries (multi-cell) | 16pcs + 30pcs |
| Single lithium-ion cell | 40pcs |
| Sodium-ion batteries (single cell) | 20pcs |
| Sodium-ion battery packs (single cell) | 18 batteries + 10 cells |
| Small sodium-ion battery packs (≤12Kg) | 16 batteries + 10 cells |
| Large sodium-ion battery packs (>12Kg) | 8 batteries + 10 cells |
A UN38.3 test report is valid for a long time but requires re-testing in the following cases:

Q: How long is a UN38.3 test report valid?A: A UN38.3 test report is valid for a long time unless there are significant changes to battery design, materials, or production processes.
Q: What if the test fails?A: If the test fails, our technical team will provide detailed problem analysis and improvement suggestions, assisting customers in optimizing product design before re-testing.
Q: How long does the test take?A: Under normal circumstances, it takes 2–3 weeks from sample submission to report issuance, depending on product complexity and testing progress.
A UN38.3 test report is a crucial guarantee for the safe transportation of lithium battery products and a basic condition for enterprises to explore the international market. Faced with increasingly strict international transportation requirements, choosing an experienced testing institution to ensure accurate and compliant test reports is vital for the long-term development of enterprises.
