Following the successive releases of the international standard IEC 62368-1:2023 (4th Edition) and the EU standard EN IEC 62368-1:2024 (4th Edition), the US standard UL 62368-1:2025 (4th Edition) was officially launched on July 31, 2025, and adopted as an American National Standard by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) on the same day.
The release of UL 62368-1:2025 marks a new phase in the safety standards for Audio/Video, Information and Communication Technology (AV/ICT) equipment in the United States.
Components certified to the traditional standards IEC 60950-1 (for IT equipment) or IEC 60065 (for audio/video equipment) will no longer be accepted. Manufacturers relying on components certified to these traditional standards must urgently review their Bill of Materials (BOM) lists. It is expected that many components of various manufacturers will require re-certification or replacement.
Revised the structural requirements for button batteries and added the requirements of UL 4200A (safety standard for products containing button batteries).
Updated the relevant tables for external circuit requirements, revised the definitions of external circuit classifications to align with IEC TR 62102, and corrected the overvoltage values for different categories of external circuits.
Updated the requirements for openings in fire-resistant enclosures, mainly revising the dimensional requirements for side openings.
Updated the requirements for wireless charging foreign object testing: clarified that the center positions of the coils of the wireless charger and the charged product should be aligned or assisted in alignment before testing, and added two test conditions—Part A (power on first, then place foreign objects) and Part B (place foreign objects first, then power on).
For fusing resistors used as safety protection in products, added the requirement that fusing resistors must comply with IEC 60127-8.
Updated the requirements for liquid cooling components. For modular liquid cooling systems (LFC) with a capacity exceeding 1 liter, new requirements such as leakage detection, fluid compatibility, and pressure relief have been formulated. It applies to heat dissipation scenarios such as servers, high-performance computers, and engraving machines.
Extensively updated the relevant requirements for rechargeable lithium batteries. Added mandatory requirements for fixed lithium battery systems, covering non-portable equipment such as data center backup power supplies and large-scale energy storage devices. For batteries with segmented parameters, explicitly added requirements for segmented testing.
Added fire spread tests caused by external heat sources for equipment with mesh/grid structures, equipment using breathable materials, and equipment with foam/fabric-covered surfaces.
The implementation of UL 62368-1:2025 reshapes the compliance landscape for AV/ICT equipment. These nine major updates—covering batteries, liquid cooling, wireless charging, etc.—have significantly increased compliance pressure for enterprises. Guangdong Energy Storage Testing Technology Co., Ltd. accurately aligns with the new standard requirements, focuses on core pain points such as component certification, leakage detection, and fire spread testing, and provides one-stop services including standard interpretation, full-process testing, and compliance consulting. Leveraging its in-depth grasp of the details of the new standard, the company helps enterprises quickly adapt to new requirements such as battery segmented testing and wireless charging foreign object testing, and efficiently complete component replacement and certification. With the full-process support of a professional team, enterprises can easily meet compliance challenges and seize market opportunities!
