IEC 62660 is a series of international standards issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) specifically for lithium-ion traction cells used in electric vehicles (EV). It consists of three parts:
Applicable to lithium-ion traction cells (cell level) for Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV).Not applicable to battery packs or battery systems (covered by IEC 62619).
This part verifies capacity degradation and overall reliability of cells within their expected service life.
表格
| Test Item | Test Conditions | Judgment Criteria |
|---|---|---|
| Cycle Life Test | Charge-discharge cycling at specified rate under ambient temperature | Capacity retention ≥ 80% |
| Storage Aging Test | Capacity recovery test after high-temperature storage | Recovery rate meets standard requirements |
| Driving Cycle Simulation | Simulate real vehicle charging and discharging profiles | No safety hazards; capacity degradation within allowable range |
Specifies strict safety test requirements for high-power and high-energy-density EV cells, referencing IEC 62133 with more stringent criteria.
表格
| Test Item | Test Conditions | Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| External Short Circuit | 55°C, resistance ≤0.1Ω, duration ≥1 hour | No fire, no explosion |
| Overcharge | Charging at specified rate with voltage upper limit control | No fire, no explosion |
| Forced Discharge | Reverse discharge to specified cut-off value | No fire, no explosion |
All items require no fire, no explosion after testing.

Q1: What products does IEC 62660 apply to?A1: Lithium-ion traction cells (cylindrical / prismatic / pouch) for BEV and PHEV. It only covers cell level, not battery system level (IEC 62619 for packs).
Q2: What is the difference between IEC 62660 and IEC 62133?A2: IEC 62133 applies to portable batteries for mobile phones, laptops and consumer electronics. IEC 62660 is specially designed for high-power EV cells and adds dedicated reliability tests in Part 2.
Q3: What are IEC 62660-2 and IEC 62660-3 for?A3: IEC 62660-2 focuses on reliability including cycle life, storage aging and driving simulation; IEC 62660-3 covers electrical, mechanical and environmental safety. The two parts are used together for full compliance.
Q4: Market access requirements for China?A4: China adopts GB 38031 as the mandatory market access standard for EV batteries. IEC 62660 serves as technical reference and supporting evidence for export certification.
Q5: How long is the IEC 62660 test cycle?A5: IEC 62660-2 reliability test: about 8–12 weeks (including long-term cycle life).IEC 62660-3 safety test: about 4–6 weeks.
